Fire Department Updates

Chief’s Message

On Saturday, October 14th we hosted our annual Fire Department Open House.  Thank you to those that were able to make it out for the event. The weather cooperated with the event and we were able to host outdoor firefighting and rescue demonstrations as well as station and truck tours.  It is events like this we enjoy hosting to better express our commitment to the community and help provide fire prevention and safety demonstrations and materials.

A quick reminder that fall back is November 5th.  A quick and simple home safety tip, while we all change our clocks going into that Sunday please take the time to test all of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and change batteries as necessary in those units. These alarms are truly life-saving and can make a difference when seconds count!

I also want to make a quick plug for our Community CPR program. We are more than 10 years into this monthly educational program. We encourage anyone and everyone, even those that have done the training before, to visit our station on Tuesday, November 28 at 6PM.  Sign-up on our website here.

October Community Education

Open House Demo
extrication

Open House

October is fire prevention month, which means we are out in the community all month teaching a lot about prevention and safety. We also welcomed community members into the fire house, which is our home away from home. This is the time of year we welcome everyone to come check out the daily lives of firefighters in our community.

This year we had a couple different demonstrations during the event. We had a vehicle in our training pad where Fire Explorer Keon Sjostrom helped demonstrate how we extricate a patient during and emergency. And we also did a demonstration of a cardiac arrest call and had a step by step explanation of all the different procedures and tools we use.

Metro Deaf School Fire Safety

We also got to bring our teachings out into the community and had a special visit to the Metro Deaf School where hard of hearing, deaf, deaf blind/low vision students were able to see and touch the fire truck and equipment. We also had a presentation on fire safety at their homes. Lieutenant Dan Concha lead the presentation using American Sign Language.

Therapy Comfort Canine

Everyone was excited when the end of October came around and we welcomed our newest member Ashes! She is a 9-week-old silver lab puppy and she's already hard at work training to be a certified service and therapy dog.

We'd like to thank all of the generous donations that have made this possible. Community donations have provided the funds needed to purchase the dog, necessary equipment, and food for the fire year. Solders 6 is providing the training for free and Rice Pet Clinic & Hospital is donating the first year of veterinary care.

Keep an eye out around the community and you might see our newest member.

Retirement

Mike Bierscheid Retirement

Firefighter Mike Bierscheid retired from the department after serving 12 years. He was a fixture within the department, and even before he was officially a firefighter he served as a citizen on our fire station needs and design committee, playing a part in the station we have today. He also taught hundreds of community members CPR classes and was a trusted ladder operator. Congrats, Mike!

October Training

This October in our Training Division our crews were hard at work on a variety of topics. On the medical side we worked through our medical guidelines for the medications we carry and practiced our advanced EMS skills.  On the fire side we took time to practice driving all of our apparatus in challenging situations and close obstacles.  We used our small utility trucks all of the way up to our biggest vehicle the ladder truck.  The ability to maneuver all of our vehicles in tight spaces in a timely manner can make the difference in an emergency. We are able to make it to the call location as quickly as possible and position the vehicles in the correct position for its best use.  This can come into play for our medical calls as well as structure fires.

All of our staff are trained to drive and operate each vehicle.  This allows flexibility and sharing of knowledge of each vehicle.
