OVAL opening delayed due to warm temps, Cedarholm Golf Course still open
Roseville Parks and Recreation staff are making some scheduling adjustments in response to this week’s unseasonably warm temperatures.
Cedarholm Golf Course will remain open this week. Come out and enjoy our community's beautiful 9-hole golf course.
Unfortunately, the warm weather will delay the opening of the John Rose MN OVAL, North America's largest outdoor refrigerated ice sheet.
“Creating and building ice on the OVAL requires several consecutive days with overnight temperatures in the low 30s and daytime highs ideally in the low 40s. Based on the current forecast, we don’t expect conditions to be suitable until the weekend,” said Roseville Parks and Recreation Director Matthew Johnson.
“Our plan is to begin cooling the slab on Friday to bring temperatures down over the weekend and start ice-making on Sunday. If all goes as expected, we anticipate opening by Wednesday, November 12. Once the ice is established, the refrigeration system can handle warmer temperatures than those required to start up.”
The Friends of the OVAL Foundation will host a Winter Kickoff event on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. The family-friendly event includes discounted public skating, prizes, giveaways, and snacks! Adding to the festive atmosphere, for the second year in a row, the Friends of the OVAL Foundation will "Light the OVAL." The trees surrounding the rink will sparkle with seasonal lights, highlighting the OVAL's signature winter charm.
