Northwestern students help with buckthorn removal

College Students help with habitat restoration at Langton Lake (7)

Students from the University of Northwestern dived into some important restoration work at Langton Lake Park on Thursday.

Student volunteers cut and removed invasive buckthorn at the 53-acre park on the north side of the city as part of their school’s Day of Prayer and Service.  Removing the invasive trees is part of a larger Natural Resources Management Plan, which calls for the preservation and restoration of forested areas, wetlands, and prairie including oak savanna in Roseville’s nearly 680 acres of parks and open space.

The Northwestern students are one of more than a dozen groups donating their time and talent to the City of Roseville in the past year.

“We are so appreciative of our volunteers who accomplish so much for our community,” said Roseville Volunteer Manager Rachel Boggs. “City of Roseville volunteers contributed 5,446 hours of service in 2024, equivalent to 2.6 full-time positions. They are helping facilitate the city’s innovative natural resources program; volunteering at community celebrations; and helping to beautify our city at clean-up and planting events.”

The City of Roseville offers many opportunities to make a difference in our vibrant city and in the lives of those who visit, work, and live in Roseville. College students remove buckthorn at Langston Lake
