[ARCHIVED] Police Honored for Work With Karen Community

Chief Mathwig receives award

The Roseville Police, along with nine other local agencies, were recognized by the Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM) for their efforts to help Roseville’s newest immigrants settle into the community.

The City of Roseville has organized several programs and activities to welcome Karen immigrants. These include holding community dialogues, building a new soccer field, donating soccer equipment and hosting lemonade stands among other outreach efforts.

The Karen are refugees, fleeing religious and ethnic persecution from the country of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Approximately 7,200 Karen live in the Twin Cities metro area, with the greatest concentration in the east metro area.

In addition to the Roseville Police, KOM recognized the Roseville Area Schools, St. Paul Police, St. Paul Public Schools, World Relief Minnesota, Minnesota Council of Churches, Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, International Institute of Minnesota and HealthEast Clinic for their support of the Karen community.
