The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the deadline to obtain a REAL ID, the federally mandated identification needed for passengers to board aircraft, one year to October 1, 2021.
The decision to extend the deadline was made due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the national emergency declaration, and the desire to allow state and local authorities to focus on responding to COVID-19, according to DHS.
Prior to the deadline extension, states were preparing to issue REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or identification by October 1, 2020.
