[ARCHIVED] Protect Roseville’s Surface Water

Fishing - Bennett Lake.jpg

When it rains, it pollutes. Rainwater can wash the landscape free of dirt and grime, but it can also wash away grass clipping, pesticides, fertilizers and other pollutants that get carried into Roseville’s storm water system.

The rain carries water and pollutants from streets, roofs, parking lots and lawns, and they eventually end up in our lakes, ponds and streams, where they can cause harm.

Help keep our water clean.

  • Do not deposit grass clippings, leaves, yard waste, or fertilizer onto streets, sidewalks, driveways, or other hard surfaces. Immediately clean up any clippings, etc., that are deposited. Make sure your lawn service complies with these requirements too.
  • Direct downspouts onto lawns rather than onto paved surfaces.
  • Clean paint brushes in a sink, not outdoors. Dispose of excess paints through a household hazardous waste collection program. Get more information at
  • Remove leaves and other debris from storm sewer catch basins near your home. This helps water quality and reduces the risk of flooding.
  • Sweep up and properly dispose of construction debris, including concrete and mortar.
  • Don’t dump yard waste into wetlands or on vacant land. Take it to a free yard waste disposal site. Locations available at
  • Do not over-water your lawns or gardens. Turn off the hose before water runs down the street.
  • Get more information about protecting our water at
Ramsey County residents can drop off grass clippings, leaves and other soft-bodied plants at any of the county’s yard waste sites. Get additional information at or call 651-633-EASY (3279). Calls answered 24/7.
