Install a carbon monoxide detector. It could save your life, and it’s the law. All homes in Minnesota must have CO detectors. Homeowners who do not have a CO detector could face liability charges.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas. The gas can build up to a toxic level if appliances are not maintained or a chimney is blocked or not properly vented.
CO detectors can be battery powered or powered by plugging into an outlet or by wiring into the home electrical system. Detectors must conform to the Underwriters Laboratory Standards and be located within 10 feet of each bedroom. Carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms should be replaced at least every ten years.
Daylight Saving Time begins March 8 this year. That’s a good day to change batteries on your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Roseville firefighters will change smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries for the elderly or anyone with a disability living in Roseville. Contact the Fire Department at 651-792-7009 to arrange a time for a firefighter to visit your home.
