Each spring and summer MMCD treats thousands of acres of mosquito habitat with “Bti” a naturally occurring soil bacterium that prevents immature mosquitoes from becoming adults. Field workers apply this by hand in wetland areas smaller than three acres. Larger areas are treated by using helicopters. Treatments occur right after summer rains of one inch or more and continue for up to ten days. Treatment is more than 90% effective and has no significant human or animal health risks. MMCD only treats for mosquitoes on public property but mosquitoes live everywhere. They only need a few teaspoons of water to reproduce. You can help prevent mosquitoes from reproducing. Remove any water-holding containers from your property. Empty rainspouts and keep gutters clear of debris. Change the water in your birdfeeder at least once a week so that mosquito eggs can’t mature. “Bti” can be added to your ornamental ponds or fountains. Bti is available at many home and garden centers.

Old tires collect rainwater and make an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. MMCD will remove old tires that are off the rim. Call 651-645-9149 for this free service.
